Pathway

Bethlehem College is an integrated, inter-denominational, Christian School teaching to the national prescription with very high standards in both academia and behaviour.  Therefore, to enter mainstream studies, both domestic and international students must pass the entry requirements.

The majority of international students study for at least one year, their aim being to learn English, both written and spoken.  Some students come to New Zealand to complete their school education, and also intend to continue their studies at University or other tertiary institutions.  Guidance and advice is available to students to help them gain the necessary qualifications to continue with a tertiary education.

Programmes

Mainstream studies

To gain direct entry to Bethlehem College Secondary - international students must have an intermediate level of English or above,

IELTS 4.5 for years 7 - 10, and IELTS 5.0 for years 11 - 13.

Upon arrival all students are assessed for their language competency and are placed in an appropriate course level.  The International Dean will assist with subject choices.

If a student does NOT meet the criteria for direct entry, an intensive English language programme or high school preparation course may be completed at the Bay of Plenty English Lanugage School (BOPELS).

Upon successful entry into Bethlehem College, students are encouraged to prepare for NCEA Levels 1, 2 & 3.  NCEA Level 2 University Entrance Literacy is now offered as part of the Year 13 ESOL Course.  Advanced students are prepared for the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examination which takes place at the end of each year.  Guidance and advice is available to students to help them gain the necessary qualifications to continue with a tertiary education.

ESOL is one of the subjects offered by the College for Years 11 - 13.  A Teacher Aide is available to assist students in Years 7 - 10 in their subject areas.

At Bethlehem College, academic reports are given to the students twice yearly.  Copies of these reports are forwarded to parents or agents.
